                                        Bowen move on back
Are you in a lot of pain or discomfort?  Have you tried other treatments or therapies and found that you still hurt?  Bowen may be the therapy for you.

The Bowen Technique is a very gentle, unique, remedial technique.  Don't let the term gentle be mis-leading.  It is gentle but powerful.

So what is Bowen?  It is easiest to describe what it is not:  it is not a form of massage, it does not involve manipulation.  No oil is used.

A Bowen treatment addresses the body as an integrated system, ie that every part is connected.   Frequently with an injury, you just feel the discomfort in one part of your body (such as your shoulder).  You forget that the whole body is coping with the discomfort.

As Bowen addresses the whole body, it can help with a range of problems including frozen shoulder, painful knees, TMJ syndrome, backache.

Bowen helps the body to naturally heal itself.

It is so gentle that it is suitable for people of any age: from babies to the elderly, from pregnant women to sports people.

What is a Bowen session like?

Normally treatments are done with you lying on a massage couch on your stomach but it can be done with you sitting on a chair or in whatever position is comfortable for you.  The treatment can either be done through light clothing or directly on the skin.  It is whatever is comfortable for you.

Bowen involves a gentle move that moves across tissue: muscles, tendons, ligaments.  These moves can be performed "skin on skin" or through loose clothing.  The movment, itself, feels like you have "plucked a string of muscle or tendon".

A Bowen session consists of a series of these moves.  After about four of these moves, the therapist lets the body rest for a few minutes, i.e. the therapist doesn't touch the client.  This part of the treatment is unique to Bowen.  Many clients, at first, find this "odd" but these "breaks" allow the body to process what has happened.  I like to think that a conversation is going on between the brain and the body.   The brain checks its systems as a report of muscle movement has occurred that the brain didn't ask for.  Muscles and nerves re-establish communication, injuries start to heal.  The body starts to relax and to heal.
