How do you think of your body?
Do you even think about your body? In my experience, it is physical pain that suddenly makes you aware of your own body. It is always a shock when your body suddenly is generating pain. Thoughts such as: "Why me?" "What have I done to deserve this?" suddenly come into your mind.
Your body hasn't suddenly appeared, it has been there all the time. It is the awareness of your body that has been lacking. Body awareness is an interesting and important concept. You can move without awareness but you move better with it!
This is what I love about massage and bodywork, it helps you to become aware of your own body. The massage stroke is felt by the body - there is information being reported to you about tissues in your own body. Often the report is one of surprise: "I didn't realise that area was tight" or "Hey, you've hit a spot there - it's tender". Once you become aware of these areas, you can start to do something that helps the tissue to loose its tightness and pain. (If you don't know it already, normal tissue shouldn't complain when it is being massaged - that is unless the therapist is using a lot pressure. I'm not one of those therapists who say "no pain, no gain". In my opinion, this approach does not respect your body.) One thing that will help ease the tension is a bodywork session.
So how aware are you of your body? If the answer is you don’t know, re-connect with a massage.
