Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage describes the "standard" massage.  It normally given with the client lying on a massage tableuses a variety of massage strokes to address the body's tissues.  These strokes can be very light and gentle or can be firmer depending on what the tissue needs.  Massage makes you aware of your body.  Touch engages your nervous system which then reports to you on how the body feels.  You may feel tightness in your arm or pain in your leg.  Until you were massaged, you were unaware of how the tissue felt.

It doesn't matter if you feel stressed or fatigued, massage can help you feel better!    If you are stressed, soothing strokes will be used which calm the nervous system.  If you are fatigued, a more active approach maybe used to stimulate the nervous system.

The physical effects of massage on the body

Massage stimulates local blood flow.  The area being worked on will start to feel warmer.  The skin may appear more flushed.

Circulation is a little appreciated function of the body.  Blood circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and, at the same time, removes the waste products of the tissue's metabolism.  By improving the local circulation, tissue health is improved.

Massage affects the nervous system - it stimulates the parasympathetic system which is involved in rest and digest functions of the body.  When the parasympathetic system is stimulated the body goes into "relaxation mode".  Muscle tension is reduced making tissues more flexible.  With reduced muscle tension and increased flexibility, joint mobility is increased.

What does this mean for you?

You will feel better, more flexible, feel that you can stretch further.  Those aches and pains will feel less or even seemed to have disappeared!
The bottom line is that you have a feeling of enhanced well-being!
